James E. Gaskin, Keynote speaker for ITEC Portland, IT Culture, technology and tools

Today, Tony, Ralph and George talk from ITEC’s keynote speaker. George and Tony talk about an article in Information Week bringing up the concern that IT departments are playing it too safe. We hear from Alixandra of Angel Mystics in Virginia with questions on how to effectively put callers through a smooth payment process then connect live to a person with her organization. Ralph warns Oregon businesses not to respond to a mail solicitation from Assumed Business Name Renewal Service. Poll: IMs Help Teens Avoid Embarrassment

WASHINGTON (AP)—Sure, instant messaging is fast and efficient. For many teenagers, it’s also a great way to avoid those OMG moments – that’s “omigod” – of mortifying face-to-face confrontations.

More than four in 10 teens, or 43 percent, who instant message use it for things they wouldn’t say in person, according to an Associated Press-AOL poll released Thursday. Twenty-two percent use IMs to ask people out on dates or accept them, and 13 percent use them to break up.

Amazon to launch Kindle e-book reader on Monday? Picture is on the link provided in today’s liner notes

At this point we’ve heard so many predicted launch dates for Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader we’re a little jaded about the whole thing, but CNET is reporting that their always-reliable “industry sources” have confirmed a Monday launch for the device and service. The specs will apparently remain consistent with what we’ve been hearing for so long now—$399, 6-inch screen, no integrated backlight, WIFi, EV-DO on Sprint for OTA book purchases, and a big ol’ dose of the ugly—but rumors are rumors, so don’t get too mopey if Monday comes and goes with no announcement.

Web Videos Stealing TV Viewers, and Marketers

WHY are fewer viewers watching the new fall television series? Perhaps because they are too busy watching video online.

As broadband service becomes more available at home, the growing prevalence of video programming on the Internet is catching the attention of consumers — not to mention marketers and media companies.

“Video has been liberated” from the TV set, Beth Comstock, president for integrated media at NBC Universal, said last week at a panel at the Ad:Tech conference in New York.

YouTube will do higher quality, not HD

YouTube is planning to upgrade the quality of its videos within the next three months, but it will not be high-definition video.

The social video company has been testing higher quality video, but it does not want to alienate its traditional users with long load times. YouTube provides content to everyone, co-founder Steve Chen said at the NewTeeVee conference.

Other sites had incorrectly reported that Chen was referring to high definition. One of the moderators of the panel at the NewTeeVee Conference where he revealed his upcoming plans for YouTube cleared the air.

“What I got out of [Chen’s] comments was that YouTube’s first priority is making sure everyone, everywhere, on any device, could view every video on the site. Steve actually said himself, as the commenters above are saying, that HD really doesn’t make sense for the short, silly clips that are YouTube’s bread and butter,” Liz Gannes wrote to AlleyInsider.
